Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) is responsible for coordinating planning, preparedness, and mitigation, response and recovery efforts to natural and man-made disasters. Emergency management planning oftentimes requires considerable expertise in order to evaluate the full scope of the potential loss. In recognition of the importance of planning in mitigation activities, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has created Hazus US - Multi-Hazard (HAZUS-MH) a powerful geographic information system (GIS)-based disaster mitigation tool that is coupled with Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) ArcGIS Desktop.
Using the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) HAZUS-MH software, the Northwest Regional Planning Commission prepared a Level 2 (customized) flood inundation analysis for Taylor County which examines the potential economic impacts associated with 100-year and 500-year flood scenarios. The study focuses on building community economic resiliency through a broad range of strategies and mechanisms needed to reduce risk and vulnerability. This project was funded by the Economic Development Administration (EDA) as a regional pilot project to address community economic resiliency in rural communities.
